I was very excited to find - posted on You Tube since I’d looked last year - The Merry Widow operetta by Franz Lehar starring amongst others, Jeremy Brett as Count Danilo. It’s a major role. I used to know my Beethovan. Who doesn’t know the opening to his famous Fifth Symphony? Da-da-da daaaah! Or the theme of the Ninth, 'Ode to Joy'? The ‘Eroica’ in E flat major? The ‘Pastoral’ Sixth? The piano concertos? Even if I can’t remember which is which, I grew up hearing these and more on imperfect vinyl on my parents ropey music centre. ( Read more... )
